London Theatre

Pink Martini @ London's Hammersmith Apollo Theatre
Monday

We caught Pink Martini's concert in London this past Monday. They played a lot of pieces from their upcoming album Splendor in the Grass and some sneak peaks from their album due out in 2010, including a delightful Turkish piece.

Of course, I'm dancing in my seat half the time they were playing. Bounce bounce bounce!



Wicked!
Tuesday

Having heard of the premise of the show Wicked, the untold story of the witches from the Wizard of Oz, but little else, I had few expectations for the show.

Then Monday while walking to the Victoria line tube entrance, I saw a poster plastered on the side of the Victoria Apollo theatre where it is showing, only two blocks from our office in London. I remembered Ashley said it was good, and Meow and I got curious, so we bought tickets and saw the show last night. The cast was thrilling, the stage and costumes so very decadent, and the story was fantastic and surprising. London theatre never disappoints, but this is one of those shows that makes you jump up and wow.

Wednesday

Another unplanned venture, and mostly Meow's idea, but certainly entertaining. Sure, four solid days of theatre may seem like a lot, but when you're in the city where theatre doesn't get any better, it's really hard not to take full advantage of it.

The Priory
Thursday

This showing at the Royal Court Theatre was the only theatre ticket I bought in advance, having scoured London's TimeOut magazine for show leads of interest. And man, it did not disappoint. The actors carried off the show with such ease, the tale of a New Year's Eve group of 30-something friends having a whirlygig of a party, examining their lives, amid intriguing mini-dramas and compelling conversations... a perfect play for a birthday.
